Peterborough Airport Joins the Southern Ontario Airport Network

With air travel demand forecasted to outpace the current capacity of regional airports, a group of eleven southern Ontario airports have responded with the launch of the Southern Ontario Airport Network (SOAN) at an event today. The group, comprised of eleven of the region’s most commercially significant airports, is dedicated to making sure the growing demand for air travel in southern Ontario, which is expected to reach approximately 110 million passengers by the early 2040s, is supported.

Members of the Southern Ontario Airport Network include: Toronto Pearson International Airport, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Hamilton John C. Munro International Airport, Lake Simcoe Regional Airport, London International Airport, Oshawa Executive Airport, Niagara District Airport, Peterborough Airport, Region of Waterloo Airport, and Windsor International Airport. Transport Canada and Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation are also important contributors to SOAN’s work.

SOAN members recognize that the region has the potential, given its many air transportation assets, to meet the growing demand for air travel. Through responsible planning, the SOAN will ensure that the region is well placed to keep the jobs and economic benefits of air service demand in Southern Ontario.

“We're delighted to be a partner in the newly formed Southern Ontario Airport Network.

Since 2008, the Peterborough Airport has seen over $40M in airport infrastructure improvements. This expansion positions Peterborough as a premier aviation and aerospace centre in Southern Ontario. We will continue our efforts to promote Peterborough as a centre of aerospace excellence, meeting the expansion requirements
of our valued employers who already know the business advantages of the Peterborough Airport and new aerospace employers seeking growth opportunities.

It is exciting to be working closely with the Southern Ontario Airport Network and we expect this initiative will result in meaningful opportunities for Peterborough’s economic growth”

- Daryl Bennett, Mayor, City of Peterborough

"Peterborough Airport executives have been working with the Southern Ontario Airport Network (SOAN) since 2015.

Working with the Southern Ontario Airport Network allows Peterborough Airport to identify opportunities for air service and land development projects, and share best practices with the other 10 airports in the Network.

This initiative will help Peterborough Airport achieve its objective which is to grow the number of aerospace companies as well as general and corporate aviation tenants located
 at the airport.

In addition, Peterborough Airport hopes to develop inbound and outbound destinations
 with commuter air carriers.”

- Trent Gervais, General Manager, Peterborough Airport
