Local dignitaries and business representatives gathered at the Peterborough Airport today to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the $28.6 Million Airport Development Project. MP Dean Del Mastro, MPP Jeff Leal, Warden J. Murray Jones and Mayor Paul Ayotte each identified the project as a key investment in local infrastructure.

The $21.0 Million Airport Major Infrastructure Capital Project is funded equally by the Federal and Provincial governments through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) and the City of Peterborough. The City is also funding the $7.6 Million Airport Development Capital Project, bringing the municipality’s share of the combined projects to $14.6 Million. The Airport Development Project is one of the largest infrastructure investment projects ever undertaken by the City of Peterborough.

Actual construction work on the expansion and runway extension (to 7000’) began in early August. The project is full steam ahead, with the following work currently underway:

  • Apron I – extension
  • Apron II
  • Runway extension east of Airport Road
  • Taxiway extension
  • Industrial lot preparation
  • Runway extension to the west
  • Installation of cul-de-sacs at Airport Road closure points

The plan is to have a contractor in place to begin construction on the Air Terminal Building in September. This will allow the building to be constructed through the winter in preparation for completion in the spring of 2011.
“I am delighted to see construction underway.” said Mayor Ayotte, “The Peterborough Airport expansion will further position Peterborough as a premier aviation and aerospace centre. Known for its exceptional quality of life, the Peterborough region offers a skilled workforce and this important investment in infrastructure will open the door for prospective employers to choose Peterborough as a strategic location for growth.”

Malcolm Hunt, Director of Planning and Development Services for the City of Peterborough stated, “Major decisions such as the one City Council made to invest in Peterborough Airport’s expansion are milestones that define who a community is and where it is going. Time will prove that this decision to invest in Peterborough’s future was a truly defining moment for the City of Peterborough and the surrounding region”
