The Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, will visit Peterborough this Monday, June 17th, 2013. During her visit she will formally announce the Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Aviation and Aerospace program being established by the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District School Board (PVNCCDSB) in partnership with the Peterborough Airport.

Recognizing the importance and growth opportunities within this sector locally, provincially and nationally, PVNCCDSB approached the airport with this partnership opportunity last winter. Since that time, Trent Gervais, Airport Manager, and representatives from the school board have been working to establish the program. The school board plans to have one teacher located at the airport to establish and teach the program starting in fall, 2013.

With recent infrastructure growth and multi-level government support for the Peterborough Airport, it is anticipated that jobs will be created and new investment will be attracted to the region. In order to attract and fill these jobs, the region needs to be able to supply skilled workers to fulfill staffing needs. This program has been established in response to that predicted growth.

The establishment of this program is consistent with the Business Case for Infrastructure Development for the Peterborough Airport which identifies Aviation Education as one of the top 4 areas to target for growth at the airport.
